We think electricity
just comes out of a socket. But it travels a long way to get there.
The electricity generated in our own power stations or purchased
from our suppliers is carried on our 110 kV high-voltage network
to one of our transformer stations. There, the high-voltage electricity
is converted (or as we say “transformed”) to a medium
voltage (10 kV or 20 kV). It is then carried on our 1300 km medium-voltage
network to one of around 1600 transformer or consumer substations
in the urban area. Power is supplied to many industrial customers,
for example, via these consumer substations. In the DREWAG transformer
substations, the power is further transformed to a lower voltage
(230 V or 400 V). From here, approximately 2,800 km of low-voltage
lines carry electricity to nearly 50,000 domestic service meter boxes.
From there, it’s just a few more metres to your socket.

The transformer stations
As you know, your socket delivers electricity at 230 volts. But your
electricity travels a long way before it reaches you. It crosses
Dresden at least once!

Power is supplied within the city of Dresden
via the 110 kV network, which is connected to the 110 kV network
for the surrounding countryside. It is linked to the 380 kV
grid via large transformers.
The transformer stations convert the power from 110 kV to the
distribution voltage of 10 kV or 20 kV.
